I have a friend who wants to save every man with problems that she meets. This has led to relationships with drug addicts, alcoholics, veterans with PTSD, an alcoholic pilot who was 30 years older than her, men who often talked of suicide, more drug addicts, and a guy with anger management issues who ended up going to jail for beating the crap out of some guy at a bar.

ALL of these relationships, repeat, ALL of them, started out with her feeling sorry for the guy and wanting to be their friend. She'd meet the guy, hear his tale of woe, feel sorry for him and genuinely think he was a nice guy. Who knows, maybe they were at some point. They'd latch onto her as a friendly face and a warm, um, shoulder to cry on. They were good for a few weeks (or days), then they all fell back into their self-destructive ways. Each and every one of them. Who knows how much money she "lost" (read: stolen) and how much agony she went through watching the men she'd come to care about slowly kill themselves.

ALL of these relationships, repeat, ALL of them, ended in tears, heartbreak and "why couldn't I save him?"
