Do you have any hay auctions in your area? That might be your best bet on getting a good price. Of course, you'll have to have some way of hauling it
yourself (horse trailers work).

This! My BO gets all of her hay at auctions, she has a big hay trailer (a flatbed) and she gets really good prices. Sometimes we do get bad bales (stemmy,
moldy, etc) but we feed those to the fatties. You'd be surprised, most horses will pick around mold and other bad stuff.

Not all of them will, however. Some of them will eat it just fine and get quite sick, and possibly die.

if we have bad hay we'll toss it out in the paddocks with the fatties, they WILL pick it out because they have other hay with them. at my barn it's hard to keep hay mold-free, especially if it's on the top or bottom of the stack. if it's too bad we toss it out.
