The click is an instant signal that they got it right. When you first start you click, treat, click, treat, click, treat like standing in the stall. That way they get the idea that click = treat.
Then you start working with them. Ok.. let's move up to where I spend a good deal of time. I don't use an actual clicker I say "good boy" (or girl). So if I'm in the round pen and I step in front of them for the halt when I first start lunging I say "Whoa" step in front, they stop I "click" (say good boy) and then give a treat. Pretty soon they are just waiting for the whoa so they can slam on the breaks for me and get their "good boy". If I want something else, like for them to turn toward me I say "Whoa" the slam on the brakes, I wait to see what they will do when they turn toward me I say "good boy" and give a treat. AH HA.. now they think "ohhh whoa = stop and now turn in which = treat.
People worry that you have to treat all the time. Thing is when you get further along the "good boy" or click is a signal that a treat will come. Doesn't have to come right away though. Just the "bridge" which is the click or the good boy. When they hear the bridge word or sound they KNOW they go it right and they know that because they have been treated for it in the past.
Once established it's faster because it's all about positive reinforcement vs "punishment" for doing it wrong. On the list I'm on someone did a great summary of why it works better than negative reinforced training.
Here's what she wrote which was actually something John Lyons explained I think it puts it in perspective.
Negative reinforcement based training.
John Lyons explained this concept this way: Imagine you are abducted by aliens. You're in the space ship and the aliens are pushing and prodding you. You do not understand their language, but you know that they want you to do something. So you try to do something to get them to quit pushing and prodding, but you do the wrong thing. Zap! You are hit with a ray gun. Try again. Nope, wrong answer, ZAP! You get hit again. While you are struggling to figure out what it is they want you to do, you get zapped every time you give a wrong answer. 30 seconds after you've done the right thing, but are currently doing something else, they give you a pat on the head. What did they pat you for? Naturally, you think it's what you are doing now. You've completely forgotten what you did thirty seconds ago. So when they poke and prod you some more and you do what you THINK you got rewarded for, zap! You get whalloped again!
Now you are totally confused, and besides, a pat on the head is hardly your idea of a reward. **Getting them to quit pushing and prodding you is a MUCH greater reward!** That is ALL clicker training is about! All it does is simply ***mark the correct behavior at the instant it happens***. The reward can come any time after the marker is delivered. How hard can it be to grasp such a straightforward concept?
Positive reinforced training
Now imagine the aliens are more enlightened. They show you in tiny increments what it is you need to do, and every time you understand this teensy clue, you are instantly rewarded. Every time you make a wrong choice, they ignore it and create ways for you to be successful. Every time you pout and throw a fit, they turn their backs to you, which means your behavior will earn you no more rewards. So you come back to your senses and try a little harder NOT to be ignored, but to continue learning their "language." When you do exactly what they want, you are doubly rewarded! Eventually you learn that these aliens are offering you a much better gig than you had on earth, where you were working for chump change, your boss is constantly nagging and harrassing you, your co-workers try to trip you up all the time to make themselves look good. You are constantly learning more and more of the language through positive reinforcement. Eventually you know your job well enough that you excel at it. The rewards are not so frequent for certain performances, you do them automatically, and because you are secure doing them, but you never fall short of new ways to learn and receive praise. And surprise of surprises, the aliens are always coming up with unexpected bonuses for a job well done! The aliens never punish or correct unless you try to bite them, and then they'll make you think you're going to die, but only for three seconds. There is no retribution during the training process, and negativity is not a part of their language or training protocol. Eventually, they earn ALL your trust, and you know that you can depend on them to communicate clearly all they require of you, even when the chips are down.
