That's great when it works out and you find a good deal. Just my words of warning from my own experience with a hard keeper: make sure you tell them very clearly how much feed he was getting and needs to keep weight. And though it can suck, offer to pay a little more if they think it would be best. I mean, even $25 a month can make a difference on how they feed him and keep good relations. Sometimes they smile and nod while really thinking at the back of their mind "nah, no way does that horse need that much" and do what they want to. Even with paying for extra feed and hay, my current barn is still cheaper than my last where he lost weight.
