^^^Because often, we are. Men do it too, but it tends to be on more of a sexual level. "I'd never date a fatty" type comments to each other or in front of each other. I think it's a bonding kind of thing, as opposed to the insecurity kind of insults that Cluny's talking about. Men are less likely to be insecure about their weight, thus, less likely to be catty and nasty about such subjects to your face.

All generalities, of course.

As for the quality of life points made, all I need to do is look at my barely mobile grandmother to know that taking care of myself NOW will lead to greater quality of life later. She never exercised, never ate right, and still doesn't. Now she can barely walk, never leaves the house, and is utterly miserable, and there's nothing physically wrong with her; she's just weak from a lifetime of body abuse. I'll eat junk food as an occasional treat, and I enjoy it, but a few cheeseburgers aren't worth living a life like that. Old age is coming for all of us, whether we're living for the moment or not.
