Okay, I pretty much made one of the dishes today for Christmas lunch with the family and it is a sort of tradition though it has several incarnations, it always seems to show up at a family meal.
Basically, today's version was green beans with bacon and a sweet orange sauce.
Drain the green beans, pour them into a big pan. Cook the bacon then crumble it into little pieces and put it on the beans. Cook in the oven for about 30minutes at 350. Will that's happening, you can make the sauce. Basically it's orange juice (today I used fresh squeezed, even, from real actual oranges), a half a stick of butter, a couple spoonfuls of light brown natural sugar, and a couple more of orange blossom honey (i was sort of just going by what looked good). Mix in a saucepot over medium heat till all melted together. Once you're ready to serve, pour the sauce over the beans and reheat in oven for a few minutes if necessary.
The original incarnation was green bean bundles (whole green beans wrapped with bacon and secured with a toothpick...you have to half-cook the bacon first in the microwave) covered with a cheese sauce (my mom's done that one though I assume it's a lot of shredded cheddar with milk and some flour for thickening). Bake it the same way, etc.
We've also done the bundles with the orange sauce and with a sweet brown sugar sauce. But sometimes we get too lazy to make the bundles and just do bacon over the top instead.
