You should be checking blankets DAILY. That is what I was always taught. The show horses in the barn always got checked after they were fed because my trainer once had a horse colic because of a leak from a messed up blanket. One of his grooms didn't check the horse's blanket and they believe that the cold and wet under the blanket had made him sick. Your horse can get caught on something and bleed, etc. ALWAYS check your blanketed horses daily.

What exactly are you feeding? Like what type of hay?

Knowing the weight is good. I would try and get a person knowledgeable with equine nutrition to decide what you should be feeding and what you should be feeding pound for pound and what type of hay you should be feeding him specifically.
