The horsemen I respect most are those that acknowledge they will spend a lifetime learning new things everyday. There are certainly things I would love to learn and experience with other breeds and disciplines. Most of them involve riding. As a kid I had no fear of sitting on any horse anywhere. At 18 I was a BM for a small eventing barn, still got to ride the owners' horses but started spending more time on the ground teaching beginner lessons. I did a few years as an Arab show groom and the last 15 yrs have been spent on the track and the last few on a breeding farm. While I have learned alot about lameness, illness, breeding, foals and so forth I wish my riding skills matched the rest. You can put me on the end of a lead rope or shank and I have no fear of anything at the other end. I absolutely love doing the groundwork on young horses, I am totally in my element. But when it comes to getting on, I want something already broke and prefer to be headed into the woods or down the road. I can handle myself on something young or not that well broke but I don't enjoy it like some do. Sometimes jumping the occasional creek or log makes me long to start over and continue the lessons but I know in my heart I am a better caretaker than I could have ever been competitor. I am happy with my lot in life, my employers know I am capable of handling the responsiblilites given to me and the horses know I care about them and treat them fairly.
And once I win the lotto I will have horses well versed in each discipline that I'm interested in...lol actually I would pay professionals to retrain OTTB's & fuglies.
