I have several friends who were adopted who have had wonderful, happy lives; they are well-adjusted, beautiful people who love their parents. They might as well be their biological children.

I do have one friend who knows her birth mother. She strongly resents her because she's what most people on here would call a worthless sack of shit. My friend (who is now in med school, by the way) was adopted by doctors who couldn't have children on their own, and she deals with a lot of guilt behind knowing what her genes are like and thinking she's an inferior medical student, and that her parents' biological children (had they existed) would have been smarter, better children and more brilliant doctors.

I've considered adoption for the future myself and based on my friend's situation I think I'd want a closed adoption. She's an amazingly smart, wonderful person and it just makes me sad to think she deals with those kinds of feelings.
