So I've been thinking...I really want to get some more training put on Elly, make her more solid and work on some of her kinks, although she has very few.
Mostly she just gets excited and prances sideways, easy to keep under control by holding her in with rein/thigh. I want to be able to show her, and work well
with her in arena settings, she is already amazing when put on cattle and has proven herself to go for MILES in sagebrush that goes almost up to her head
sometimes. She is not afraid of cows at all, and will stay right on one if asked, not cutting but following or standing infront of. She could probably cut on
her own she just about did it when I was on her and a cow ran straight for her, she lunged forward at it and turned that sucker right around where it was
supposed to go. She has a lot of sense for a 4 year old (Almost 5 I believe), but she does have a lot of energy when needed.
Elly is trained in Reining, but they didn't do tight spins on her, just basics and put a good stop and reverse on her (Too good in the reverse department if you ask me, if she gets upset she backs up, but a little tap to the sides and she'll knock it off.)
I would like to see her go english at some point, but as some of you know, reining horses turn a touch different than most other horses, so that would be awkward for any english trainers, haha.
I'm thinking I may ask to have the local college instructor/ reining trainer take her in for a month and get her in the situations I want her in, is it too much to ask for her to be ridden in a crowd, in front and in back? Also ask to have her shown if possible, just to get her out to experience it, not to win. Also maybe work on her kicking, she doesn't do it all the time but when she is in heat and a male horse comes up behind her she'll kick. And possibly some trail time...
She is very bold and not spooky at all, infact she walked right past a giant water pump that was blowing out hot air and it was really loud, almost could have used earplugs going by that sucker. She also walked under the big giant irrigation spraying water on us with no problem, I know a lot of horses would have shit themselves over that, but all she did was look, pause, and then go on. I don't think I saw her spook once when she was in the sagebrush and cattle were popping up out of nowhere. She didn't seem to mind the wild burros either, but they were tooooooo cute to be scary if you ask me.
So do you think I should put of English training for a while, or all-together and focus on what she already has a very solid foundation in?
I've had people who seemed interested in buying her too, but I'm not sure I want to sell unless its for the right price. I know I got her for a steal because the girl I got her from was my friend and pretty desperate for cash.
I am positive Elly will be one of those can do all, bombproof horses that everyone wants. I'm sure if I give her 2-3 years and more exposure to things she will be absolutely amazing.
What do y'all think?
And looking at her, what discipline would you use her for? Just pretend she wasn't trained for reining and tell me what you would want her to be if she was yours.
