My sister-in-law boards two horses on my property. She had one bred the day before her mother died. This was a reaction to the grief of loosing her mom, and
she's named the unborn foal already - given the foal her mom's name. My mother in law was a great lady, but I think breeding the horse was
inappropriate. Sis-in-law's mare is from a questionable bloodline and the mare is flighty and spooks and bucks and can't be ridden like other horses of
that bloodline. So "Mommy Mare" is carrying a foal with that documented bad bloodline. This smacks me of "backyard breeding" and I am
uncomfortable with it.
In August sis-in-law adopted another mare - a lovely eleven year old grulla quarterhorse. She wants me to have a horse to ride, and now she's shopping for a stud to breed "Miss Gray" to! Miss Gray's owner died and although the owner's daughter loves horses, she's busy raising young children of her own and has no time for the horses. Miss Gray was borderline homeless when sis-in-law brought her home.
I am afraid my sis-in-law is a backyard breeder. She loves baby horses but is clueless of all the ramifications of what she is doing. She bred another mare a few years ago and ended up giving away the filly and mare! She couldn't train the filly. Mommy Mare has been a problem. Miss Gray was too busy the past several years being a Foal Factory to be ridden. I've been doing some of the Parelli exercises with her and she's cool with them.
I am not really a horse person, but I am enjoying having them on my property and learning how to care for them. I want to learn to ride and Miss Gray is pretty mellow. She's had four foals and I think that's enough. Even one of her now grown foals is in need of a new home!
I just want to learn to ride Miss Gray and head out on the mountain trails with her next summer.
My husband is the horse owner's brother and he's not very happy about the backyard breeding going on. She lives in a small cabin on our property near where the horses live. We want to do an intervention with his sister. How can we talk her out of having Miss Gray bred? Links to good sites that can help my husband and me talk sense into his sister!
Backyard breeding of dogs is bad. Backyard breeding of cats is bad. So is backyard breeding of horses. I don't know that much about horse care, but I do know something is very wrong with what sis-in-law is doing.
Please help! Thanks.
