Just looked thru the Hunter Section of the USEF rulebook and the only mention of braiding requirements is in relation to Ladies Side Saddle attire. It makes the specific point that roached manes and pulled tails are exempt from the braiding rule. Roaching/hogging is one of those "not done all that much" things - plenty of folks who think it looks icky including some judges, plus since we're so addicted to the crest-release, it's nice to have a few little knobs to grab.
