How are the girls doing? Did those issues work out well?

Well, I thought I was going to leave the horses out all winter. But I am missing riding way to much. Kalli the clumpa has had about 4 months off due to minor injuries. I am going to bring her back in next week and start to put a few miles on her.
I am putting a few pictures up of a little gelding I think I am going to buy. My husband has said I am only allowed two horses so one of the girls will have to go. I think I may sell Kalli, I love her to bits, but she has not matured at all how I expected, in relation to how her parents are.
The New boy is an Australian Stock horse. His mother is the sister of my beautiful mare that I lost in a tragic accident. I am already completely in love. He has the most gorgeous temperament, he is beautifully handled, his sire is a bit of a star, he has great movement, and I think he will be a great height for me, and he is the right price. The only thing I am a little annoyed about is the colour (I can not believe I am going to have another Palli).
I would put him on the Confo board, but everyone will probably give him a bashing . I trust my own judgement anyway. I think I have a pretty good eye. Wil as a foal with mum Photo's I took on friday, he is looking a bit feral in his winter woolies, but I still think he is cute. He is currently about 8 months old.

I started working on Kalli today. We had a couple of minor hiccups getting onto the float. I am pretty sure it is because there are a couple of holes in her training. Because she is so quiet I think I sometimes do things a little less thoroughly with her. No harm done, just the self loading needs a little more precision.
I floated her to school about 1/2 an hour away. Let her have a look in the yard for a while. It was very busy, a semi load of hay had arrived and their were kids and floats everywhere. I had hoped I wouldn't have an audience. But that's OK she was a very good girl. I tacked her up, gave her a little lunge in the round yard and hoped on. I first tested the lateral mouth, still beautiful and soft which was good. I did a little walking and trotting and some rein backs. She was very sensitive to the aids and her mouth felt great. I went and did a few laps of walk and trot around the small cross country paddock. She did not even blink. So I decided to take her for a walk around the block. I had only got 500 meters out the gate when a semi trailer came up my arse, I was thinking it might not have been such a good idea to venture out on my own, but she didn't even blink. Half way around my friend spotted me and thought I might like to stop for a chat. She stood on the edge of the road for 20mins with cars going past and never even blinked or moved. We then decided to go check out some sheep and cows. She was a very brave girl.
I would say this mare has had about 15 rides max. Probably about 2 hours total. She is such a sweetie and so quiet, but so responsive. I think it is going to be way to hard to part with this one.
Tomorrow I am going to repeat what I did today, and start with a little bit of leg yeilding. I did a small amount on the ground today. I will do a little more on the ground Tomorrow and then hopefully start with a little under saddle on Monday. Tomorrow I will also canter her a little more in the round yard. I am hoping to have her cantering a little under saddle by the end of next week.

Today's work with kalli. After catching her from the paddock I decided to do a little tyre work with her. Just to help her develop her training a little in relation to walking where she is asked. This should help with the float loading. She was a good girl. Sorry the photos are a bit crappy. it is a little hard to take them yourself. Also they are on my phone. I had decided last night that I will introduce her to the running reins today. I can only keep her at school for a week, so I need to utilise the time I have there. Since breaking her in she has still not had any contact on her mouth, only during downward transitions and rein backs. I use the reining reins to introduce the concept of having a contact whilst going forward, it also helps teach them to give at the pole. I had them on for about 5 minutes, just to have a little walk and trot. She was a good girl. Lots of pats and soft words. Here are some photos of her figuring them out. After a little break and a snack for being a good girl . I did a little ground work for the leg yield. For this I hold the cheek strap of the bridle. With enough force to stop the horse going forward, and to get a little flexion. I then apply enough pressure behind the girth area to get the horse to cross over with it's back legs. The second it does I let go of the bridle remove pressure at pat. She was a little confused at first. She mostly wanted to go backwards. But she figured it out quickly. I did this for about 3-4 minutes as well. I then put the saddle on, lunged her a little. Asked for a little canter. Then hoped on for a ride. She was a little bit snorty today. Not sure why. Whilst riding I just worked on walk -trot -halt transitions a little rein back and a couple of circles. She is still in the habit of wanting to stop when turning. but that is OK she just needs some miles on the clock. Overall a great day.

Kalli had yesterday off. Today I did a little more lunging in the running reins, this will the last day of this.
Today I did my first day of leg yielding under saddle. To teach this in the initial stages I wear spurs. I walk the horse around the round yard. I ask for a little flexion to the outside (enough to stop the horse trotting off, which they sometimes do initially out of confusion), I then apply enough spur pressure to get the horse to move over with the hindquarters and cross their back legs. The second they do this I drop the outside rein and let them go straight, and reward with patting and vocally. I never let the horse stop on the rail, depending on temperament it can frighten the horse and cause them to rare as they feel they have no where to go.
I did this exercise three times on each rein, she was a very good girl.
I then hoped off, took my spurs off and had a little ride. Just walk trot and halt again. It was good today because there were lots of school kids riding around. She was a little frightened of the little grey pony's at first . But I just let her watch and soak it in for a while. By the end I was walking around with them, walking away from and around them and doing my own thing. I was very impressed with her today. She was a little snorty on the weekend, but I think it was just the horrible cold windy weather.

Yesterday, I worked on a little walk trot and canter, After that I brought her home as school is finished and the kids are on holidays.
Today I took her for a walk around the block, she was an extremely good girl. I was worried the bucking farting horses at the end of the block were going to create an issue. But they didn't so that was good .
Hubby took some photo's when I got back.
