Don't know if anyone remembers the topic I had before Christmas about the QH my neighbor wanted to get the little girl I give lessons too...

Anyway she calls me Friday and apparently her sister works with someone that is giving away a 10 year old OTTB, I look at the pictures, he seems nice, no glaring faults. Apparently he was a rescue that she had picked up, put weight on, and was using him for lessons, and then she had thought she found him a home and had committed to rescuing another horse when the home fell through. She didn't have enough stalls so she was looking for another home. He supposedly is super relaxed, rides in a loose rein with a snaffle. He didn't work out because the girl that had taken him did eventing and he wasn't holding up to the cross country (she didn't build him up, just started jumping), but the vet said he would be fine for cross rails and lower level stuff if properly conditioned first. Owner also said that we can bring him back if it doesn't work out.
So this Saturday, we drove out to look at him, over 2 hours. He had just been picked up from the trial about 30 minutes before so he was a little excited (he had been gone for 2.5 months) we tack him up and he is a little fidgety, we couldn't ride in the ring so had to ride in a field, and he is super excited and a little strong, doesn't try anything, but is pulling and wanting to canter and excited at the trot. My sister rode him first (right now she is the better rider) and then I hopped on. He's nice, but looks to be way too much for Samantha, whose not even cantering yet and is just trotting some crossrails with my super broke mare-but I would love him for myself, he's just the type I like
I get off and tell Tammy that, and her sister (whose co-worker is getting rid of the horse) jumps in with "he just needs training, just put him in the round pen and tie his head to a circle thing and he'll supple up" (I said you mean surcingle?) I said, I really feel that he is too much for her right now, she really needs an older super broke guy, this guy is a little sensitive for her. "oh, no, he'll calm down, he's in a new place, he's not used to it, besides its not that often that you get offered a FREE REGISTERED TB!" I looked at her and said, actually its a lot more often then you think, he has an old injury in his stifle (why he couldn't do eventing), and the papers don't mean squat, he's gelded, and he's never going to race again". The whole time the owner's husband is just standing back, not really saying anything, not pressuring or anything.
I get overruled *sigh* and we get him wrapped and put a blanket on him (I have a stock trailer) and go to load him and the guy chimes in with, this should be fun, took me over a half hour to load him earlier. We lead him up and sure enough he plants his front legs, he's not going anywhere. I bring around a butt rope, touch his butt and he jumps right in (thank God!).
So anyway we have him for a 30 day trial period thing, not telling the little girl yet, she thinks its my new horse. He did settle way down, calmly unloaded, walked to his stall without spooking (it was after dark) and was really relaxed the next day...but, now he's lame. I think he may have slipped or something cus he is off in the right front and there is some slight heat and swelling right above the tendon. We wrapped him last night and put HPQR gel on and he was better this morning, no heat and most of the swelling is gone so hopefully its just a freak thing...
He's a cute little guy, 15'2, sunshine chestnut with a star and one white leg, barn name chance, registered name signaprenup, out of prenup
