Hobbling a mare is a safety issue for both the mare and the stallion. Some mares are a little feisty even when in full standing heat and will kick at the stallion. Some stallions are too valuable to risk an accidental injury. On the flip side, some mares are not receptive to a stallion even when an ultrasound proves they are ovulating. This condition is commonly referred to as "silent estrus". Breeds that allow artificial insemination have by-passed this problem. However, for breeds that only allow natural service, hobbling must be done to allow the stallion to breed a mare like this. Here's the caveat; a breeding issue like silent heat is heritable, so the question is, should we breed mares like this at all? If it is a top performance mare with a successful show career it's one thing but for your typical broodmare it seems counter productive to take a chance of passing it on.

I don't really know anything about breeding either, but from the few texts I've read about hobbling, I got the impression that it was simply a precaution used to protect the stallion, and I can't really blame stallion owners for requiring mare owners to use them. That being said, I agree with the people on here who have said it's fine as long as the mare is fully trained and accustomed to being hobbled before she is bred, and is receptive to the stallion. I am completely against using the practice as a way to force the mare to stand while the stallion mounts her if she is not receptive.

LOL, gay horses... We have a couple of q.u.e.e.r paso finos (that is not a dirty word!!! stupid censoring message board). One is a gelding who fancies himself a stallion and is into everything, but especially other geldings. Once he jumped another gelding... who Uff was riding! Bad sauce... she smacked him in the head and pushed him off, but we never gave him that opportunity again... Baronessa is a national champ paso, and was a hardcore lesbian until she had a foal (by AI of course). Now she's kind of bi - she flirts with everything but if it's male she then screams at him if he acts interested! And she gets real studdish around certain mares...
