I've raised several, including my current mare from weanies. If I can get to them when they are still on the mare and she's a good quiet mare, I teach
my babies to "tie" while still on the mare. I just loop the lead around the tie rail while mom is standing quietly tied. I do most everything this
way, picking up their feet, grooming, being handled all over, being hosed off and leading. I have never had a foal that didn't take to this approach. The
only scary thing I have had happen was when I tried to blanket my baby and her mom tried to kill her (or rather tried to kill the hoorible foal eating blanket
that was trying the swallow her filly). My babies have always lead well, tied well, stood for the farrier, got in and out of trailers, stood for baths and you
name it. What's your approach?
