I was riding my mare, who I just spent $630 on getting her hocks injected. She is moving so much better. So we were down in the ring, and she was being a bit
bratty. I started thinking, I should end it now because she hates the wintec, then I decided to keep going a bit more. She was trotting nicely on the bit,
and being good. Then out of no where she slammed on the brakes and refused to move forward. We had a big fight, she was threatening to rear, only going in
reverse and spinning. I finally got her under control, we walked forward, went around a few times then we did a bit more trotting. SAME FUCKING THING IN THE
EXACT SAME SPOT. Except this time, she managed to get herself into the middle of a jump combination. She was between the middle and last jumps. She decided
to run backwards and spin to the left. She ran into the last jump and knocked it down. She fell because she tried to go through the standards, I fell with
her. She landed on top of my left thigh, then she rolled over got up and RAN to the barn.
I screamed. I thought my leg was broken. I laid there for a few mins trying to catch my breath and decide if I was broken. I decided it wasn't. As I was getting up, a kid comes running down to the ring yelling A horse is hurt really really bad, come quick. BO came to the ring in her car to get me, everyone else ran up to the barn. We got up to the barn around the same time. I am at this point in shock, about to throw up, in severe pain, and sobbing and crying hysterically.
They called the vet, apparently the mare fell on the jump cup and sliced her side open right behind the girth. I went to the hospital because I couldn't get the pain to subside enough to calm down. I was crying, anytime I tried to move my leg it was like a 12 out of 10 on the pain scale. I put ice on and off we went. I was hyperventillating and shivering in the car on the way to the hospital. I managed to get calmed down enough to breathe again and stop shivering. While waiting for X rays, they brought my vicodin and checked me out to make sure I wasn't hurt anywhere else. I got a message from the BO telling me that the mare needed 20 stitches and a drain, IV antibiotics and banamine and she needs to be in for a few weeks. I am bummed. But not broken. They said just a severe contusion on my thigh, and I have to use crutches until I can walk without limping. But I can ride as soon as I feel up to it. I also have pain meds, I am going to try not to take them though.
I got really lucky, I didn't get cut on the jump cup and she didn't break my leg. If she had landed on me any other way, I could have broken a hip or back or knee or lower leg. So... thats my nasty fall of the day. It has been a fair amount of time since I got hurt by a horse, and seeing as how its my job- I am lucky it could have been a whole lot worse.
Please think good thoughts/prayers for my mare and that she recovers smoothly.
