Went to pick up Ivory this morning. Everything went pretty well. She loaded fine, did a bit of prancing in the trailer, but was good once we were driving.
Got to the vet's for the PPE and she was good. There are some training "issues," but that's to be expected. For example, she doesn't
ground tie, doesn't like to lead on the left, tends to not want to stop during lunging but just go faster and faster. She's fine for having her hooves
picked up, but when she's ready to be done, she wants to be DONE.
All that's fixable.
Nothing spooked her, she's very affectionate, and seems to learn quickly. She did, however, KICK me. Brat. Eh, it was a good lesson for me to remember that we haven't really pushed her yet so don't know how she'll act when she's not wanting to do something. I was trotting her out for the vet and trying to send her off from me. Flipped the end of the lead at her hip and BAM! she popped out with her rear legs and connected with my thigh. It'll be a lovely bruise in a day or two.
Health-wise, she looks great. She does turn out some on the front left, and she's a bit sickle-hocked. Vet said that if she was going to be a performance horse, it might be an issue, but for what we do, she'll be fine. She DOES have dun markings (dorsal stripe and some faint primitive markings on her legs), so after the color explanations on the other threads, I'm thinking she might have both the dun and buckskin alleles.
I will take pics later tonight. I'm skipping karate because I feel the bruise just walking...don't think karate would feel all that great. So my plans are to groom her (she has mats in her mane), then take some decent pics.
Let's see...what else? Oh, the vet showed me that she has a crappy shoe job. She has drill tek (how is that spelled?) shoes, but they're UNEVEN. You can see, on one foot, that there's a 1/2 inch difference in height from one side of the heel to the other so it causes her foot to tilt in. She's also had an abscess blowout. He spent a LOT of time looking at her gaits and movement (back and forth, walking, trotting, up and down a hill, even backing her up a hill) to make sure it was just the shoes throwing her off. I can't wait to have them pulled off tomorrow. With the blown abscess, she might needs shoes just to hold the hoof together until it grows out, but I'll leave that up to my farrier.
Couldn't get her to back out of the trailer for anything. She'd back to the edge (obviously unsure of herself) and then as soon as that back hoof touched the ground, she'd hop right back into the trailer. I did work with her long enough that, instead of exploding back into the trailer, she'd touch and come right back in but at a more "reasonable" speed. We'll have to work on that. Our stock trailer is plenty big enough for them to turn around, but I like to get my horses in the habit of backing out, too.
Right now, she's in our backyard (shares a fenceline with the pasture) grazing while the other horses are all hanging their heads over to get a look at her.
So far, I'm really, really happy with her! Can you tell?
