First off, I'm lucky that I live in the "horse capital" of my province, and we have many farriers. vets, trainers etc.. to choose from here.
I have had the same farrier working on Gunner for 3 years now, and I have always been happy with his work. He is semi-retired and only takes clinets that have good horses and pay promtly.
When I was getting front shoes put on my horse the cost was $70 for re-sets, $80 for new shoes. Then I started getting shoes on all 4, and it was $120 for re-sets, $145 for new shoes (Not sure why it was $10 for fronts new, and $25 for all around new). Now, I went back down to fronts, and is charging $80 for re-sets and $90 for new shoes.
The farrier that my coach/barn owner uses, along with a few other people in the barn charges $70 for fronts $120 for fulls, and it doesn't matter whether they are re-sets or new shoes. She does excellent work, and everyone has been continueally pleased with her work.
Since both farriers do excellent jobs, I'm wanting to switch to the farrier my coach uses, as it will save me approx $120 a year ($10 on each re-set, $20 on each new shoe setting). How do I tell him this? I've never ben really good at telling people that I no longer need their services.
I was thinking of telling him that I really appreciate the work he has done with Gunner, and he has always done an excellent job, however, the farrier that my BO uses gives us a bit of a discount due to doing so many horses there and with the financial climate right now, I just cannot turn down the savings, but I would like to thank him for all the work he has done over the years.
What do you think of that?
