Ok, I highly suspect the younger mule is IR and the vet is coming out in two weeks to pull some blood to be sure. I've been doing lots and lots of reading
about managing/feeding animals with IR, but I thought I'd see what you guys have to say as well.
If she has it, she will need to be moved to a different place, as I am pasture boarded now 24/7/365 and have no way of confining her during the day and letting her graze late at night/very early in the morning.
What can you guys tell me about the different types of hay and their average sugar content? I am okay with supplementing with something like Triple Crown's Safe Starch Forage, but I would like to have some hay to feed. I found some plans for hay feeders that have 2"x2" holes to slow down hay consumption and would be making something like this to use.
Does the sugar amounts tend to be similar in all bales from the same field from the same cutting? For example, if I could get round bales of grass hay from the bottom hay field and the first cutting, do I need to test each bale individually or will a group sample be okay?
I have heard of people mixing oat straw with their hay to slow their horses down, but I have read conflicting info about the sugar content of straws and chaff.
Which cutting of hay is generally the 'best' or has the most nutrients?
This whole thing is going to be a logistical nightmare, but if it need to be done, I'll do it.
