We've been getting hay from the same guy for about 5 yrs. He's an older guy, and I thought we had a pretty good situation with him. He's always
made sure we had enough hay for the winter, even during a drought a few years ago. We always paid him for the hay immediately with some extra thrown in
because we valued his honesty and the "relationship" that we had.
So this year, he brings some hay at the beginning of spring. Last year's hay, but still good. Said that when he cuts hay next in our area, he'll bring us enough for the winter.
Mid-summer passes, we call him to make sure that everything is ok (it's maybe morbid, but I worry about him passing away without anyone telling us). He says he hasn't forgotten us, just hasn't been able to cut yet. He'll bring us hay as soon as he does.
Last part of the summer, still no hay. We call again. He says he hopes to be cutting soon, not to worry, he'll bring us hay.
We call last week. I'm still not worried, because I trust him. Figure that, even if he hasn't been able to cut, he's probably got hay stored in the barn for us. My husband tells him that we're down to our last 10 bales...could he bring hay please...
We're told that he doesn't have any in the barn but he'll "call around" to see what he can do.
I'm trying not to be pissed off at the guy. It won't do any good. But I *trusted* him to bring us hay. Now, I'm asking any horse person we know about a source for hay for the winter. Most places I'm calling have the same story...they had some, up until about a week ago. So if this guy had CALLED us, said something unexpected came up, whatever, I could have gotten hay THEN.
So have you ever had a winter with NO hay? My horses are usually on nothing but pasture and hay. More hay in the winter, of course, but they don't get grain or anything else.
Ok, so I really am SO pissed...
