HorseHawk, please do post pics from all angles. I am fairly sure I can make one, I will at least give it a good try. I am going to be a pain in the butt and ask you to take measurements as well please!!

Louise wrote: Thanks HorseHawk, I will play with it over the next couple of weeks, and see what I come up with. When you have a moment, would you measure the nose piece from knot to knot. ____________________________________________________________________ It's 15 1/2 inches from knot to knot. Also I wrap a few wraps of baling wire & then black tape the middle of the nose band for horses that aren't real nose sensitive. I ride my stud in the rolled & taped like is shown in the pics. But on a green or just being broke horse you don't need any wire or wrap usually. They will let you know if it's too severe as their head will go up some when you pull back to whoa them & they will act like it's too strong. Lots of folks will wrap a bosal in the middle too when breaking colts, so it works the same way. The nose band I like best to use is one made out of an old roping rope. They're stiffer & make a horse respect them more. And it can get a horse's nose sore in itself, so you may need to wrap the plain nose band with tape if you use the stout roping rope for the nose band.

Louise wrote: Thanks HorseHawk. I will start one this weekend lol. The bosals I make are made from bicycle chain then wrapped in tape, then sheepskin or soft leather. If needed, I just take the sheepskin off. I like them as they are still flexible. I have made them from lariat's as well, and like them too, I just find chain easier to work with. I hate the rawhide bosals. I already went and found an old rope to try this with ha ha. Now I just need to make a trip to my welder to get some pieces made.
_________________________________________________________________________________ lol...I weld too...also redesign my bit's & make kinda what you'd call a shanked sidepull. I love experimenting with bits I make. The easy parts the welding, getting those little pieces of metal to stay right where you want them is H.e.l.l. sometimes, as my clamps are too big & usually I just try to lean sometime on it to hold till I get a spot weld...

If someone gets one made please let me know!! we're still trying to find the perfect fit for the horse at my barn who has bit issues. Right now she goes in a HS short shank hack with sheepskin noseband, but it doesn't fit her quite right, and we would love to get her something that is a beter fit, plus the fleece wears out so quickly on it and it can't be changed. ______________________________________________________________________________ Can you describe how it isn't fitting right & how you would like it to fit better?

The noseband is a little too wide, it gaps off the side of the face a little, and the top of the metal shanks rub slightly when the reins are pulled. it can be made to fit better by tightening up the curp strap, but she's not really happy at all with it overtight. She is a STB/TB cross, and her face dishes a little. I'll try to get pictures of how it fits if it would help, or of her head in general and measurements
_____________________________________________________________________________ Have you seen or tried this type of hackamore? It's a very popular one with performance trainers. The noseband will eventually wear & have to be replaced, but you can take it to a tack shop & have them do it very cheaply. Also you can use a double chan curb strap or leather curbstrap for a milder feel to the horse. I also replace the chain keeper at the bottom with leather or small thin rope that's a little bigger than twine. It gives me more leverage to let the shank flare out a little more for a better direct rein or indirect rein. http//www.thetackstop.com/bozosidepull.htm

Louise- if you have made something that you think might work for her, or think you could I would be very interested in seeing/hearing about it! She's a great horse with issues from a previous owner, and we'd love to find something that will work and hold up to the 3x a week riding she does right now without havving to be replaced every 2-3 months or so. We were thinking about trying to find a flat leather noseband that we can custom fit a sheepskin cover to, kinda like halter sheepskins. Horsegal984 - The ones I have made are basically a bosal, but they are made out of chain, then covered in either sheepskin or soft leather. I find they work very well, but I am used to riding in bosals. I find they give me all the control I need for starting young horses, and riding horses that have issues. If I have a horse that does not respond well, I can adjust the severity of the bosal. I will take some pics tonight and post them without sheepskin. HorseHawk - I am getting your's copied this week.

I first had to explore alternatives to a bit after I bought a coming-2yo Thoroughbred filly back in early 1979. A so-called trainer had broken the front of her upper jaw trying to force her into his trailer to go to an all-ages sale as a yearling and it had healed untreated. No way could she wear a bit comfortably. She was the one who chose eventing as her eventual career. For the dressage phase she and I finally found she could tolerate a Nathe snaffle with a plain cavesson and extremely light contact. I initially hung it in her mouth on a very loose headstall, no reins, and let her show me where she wanted to carry it. For cross country and stadium, she went in something very similar to this.
She also had a very deep, narrow lower jaw and low palate, and was one of those anomalous mares with all four canine teeth. I doubt she would have found many bits comfortable even if her jaw hadn't been broken. Now I just prefer bitless because the horses prefer it. My young gelding is extremely light in Margo's old noseband, or even just a neck rope and no bridle.
