OK, I posted the disclaimer, so you have been warned. I will take the gloves off if necessary, but I am honestly asking for input and opinions. I would love to
know how to handle this without my usually insensitivity. I do not want to hurt anyone's feelings or make them feel bad about themselves, but I am not the
one to back down from a "pack."
The question is,
"Why do overweight people feel the need to ridicule people who try to eat healthy?" ETA: A"nd what should be said to somene when when they are doing this ridiculing"?
Ok, often times I am in a eating situation with numerous people. Both work and recreation.
I don't eat certain things. Meat, deep fat fried food, soda, etc. I am often "ribbed" about this, and while I have pretty thick skin, there have been times when it has gone beyond "ribbing" and become downright insulting.
I don't eat meat because I don't like it.
I don't eat fried food because once you cut it out of your diet you have zero desire for it anymore (intestinal-ly and tastefully speaking).
I don't drink soda because I don't like it.
99% of the time this has happened (gone too far) it is spurred on, started or elevated by someone who is overweight. Or someone who has had the stomach surgery to loose the weight.
On one occasion, there was nasty chiding from a 26 year old female with a body fat index well over 30%. My response was, "yeah, I'm 43, when I was your age I could eat what ever I wanted and still be a size 6, now I have to work at it." She responded something along the lines of 'what a waste of time, life is too short"
That is a common response. Life is to short. I am this close ( >< ) to saying that it is even shorter if you are that fat. But I will say something along the lines of "I guess its all in your priorities" and "I enjoy rocking a hot figure more than I enjoy those onion rings"
I have "raised an eyebrow" gave the once over, up and down look and said, "No thanks for the eating advice" I think that's mean, but only after the object of the meanness has delivered he first salvo. Crimony you should have heard the nonsense I had to put up with over soy and rice milk. I can't drink milk. I t makes me mucous-y, I don't like mucous-y so I don't drink it, why is that so funny or directly insulting to you, oh 300 pound 5' 6" man?
Worst part is, I am a lifelong over eater myself. I am very over indulgent in the things I want- did someone say cake? But why WHY would someone who is obviously overweight, or who has had to resort to surgery to control their weight, ridicule someone who has a great body and works hard for it?
ETA: And how should this be handled?
