Can you explain this a bit more? I have never heard it before, and I guarantee that the meaning of my barbed wire tattoo does not mean I am a follower. In fact it has nothing to do with the 'traditional' uses/meaning of barbed wire. I dunno. That's why it was in "quotes." That's just what I have always heard- it may be specific to the upper arm band trend of the 90's (?) I thought you meant that because its so common, people will automatically think it means "follower", not that there is some widely known meaning to barbed wire as "follower". Just like when I see those Asian symbols on white girls, I think follower. Or any generic tribal design, follower. Or star sign, follower. Its only because they are so unoriginal. Sooooo unoriginal.

In many cases especially in larger galleries there will be an essay about said artist or said piece of art) At least thats been my experience and trust me , I saw more unconventional art then what would be considered "normal".

Wouldn't your opinion of that tattoo change based on the new information?

I think it's ridiculous to say "You should only get a tattoo if it has personal meaning", and just as ridiculous to say "Tattoos don't have to have meaning, you should get them if you just like the body art." It's like artwork in your home. Our walls are covered with paintings, antique prints, and photos. Every single one has meaning. They are either painted by someone we know, antique hunting prints, some done by an artist who lived down the road, or photos of us, most horse or dog related. I know many people who buy a piece of art because it's pretty - I would never do that, but there's nothing wrong with it. We just like our art to have meaning. Some just want it to be pretty.

You mean an artist statement, that is not supposed to be more than a page long? Its usually pretty vague, and I know artists to write fake ones just because. And no, artists may have their own reasons for making the work but in the end most realize that it will always mean different things to different people, and its up for interpretation. I just dont get how anyone expect people to see something and not have any opinion on it whatsoever. Thats the point of seeing things isnt it? To interpret what it is we are seeing?
TrickRoperDeluxe wrote: Asshole artists would write a fake one but any of them that are serious about selling their art and having it understood tells the truth. Of course people will take it how they see it and may buy it because of what they see not what was intended to be seen , thats life and thats how art gets sold. But every artist wants there pieces intent to be known. At least thats the experiences I have. If anyone cares to see the gallery I worked for check out http://progressivegalleries.com/ Artists I liked (as people not there art..) http://progressivegalleries.com/wpg2?g2_itemId=1416 http://progressivegalleries.com/wpg2?g2_itemId=514 http://progressivegalleries.com/wpg2?g2_itemId=1458
