I have a mare that has one of the best, most trusting personalities a person could ask for in a mare...now. She does everything I ask with a simple word of direction. But when I bought her she hated her owners & even was kicking at them while tied by herself at the end of the barn hallway, 30 feet away, while waiting to be loaded in my trailer. They evidently had whipped her previously trying to load her to take her to the vet. Never could load her, so the vet had to come to them. Anyway, long story short, I believe a horse's personality is formed by how they are treated. As I've had many horses that were abused when I bought them & turned out to have great personalities after I had worked with them for a while. So, IMHO, I buy for ability & then help form their natural trusting personalities as I'm training them. And as well as someone can shape their personalities with TLC & understanding, they can also quickly destroy a horse's great personality with abuse & training ignorance, too.So, I agree with Goflip...I never buy for a horse's personality...BTW, all my horses have trusting great personalities, even my studs. As I'm their protector, cook, doctor, teacher & Chief Bottle Washer, & the one who is always there to "Pull the thorn out of their foot" when & if it happens...lol...

As long as it was competitive? Not me, life is too short and with one like that it could end up even shorter Are you fucking kidding me? How did you get that out of what I wrote? I never said I would buy a hard to handle aggressive PITA horse, I've never even owned one. I just wouldn't buy a horse for MORE MONEY THAN IT WAS WORTH BECAUSE I LIKED IT'S PERSONALITY. Good God you only read what you want to read. Disposition and personality are not the same thing to me. Of course if you are a less savvy horse person, maybe YOU JUST DON'T FRICKIN GET IT!!!!!!!!!!!

So who will attempt to make me blow now??? Are yall lining up waiting to see something happen? Sorry to disappoint but my buttons are no longer so easily pushed why would anyone want to watch you blow, we've all seen enough stupidity. Get over yourself, HW. No one is running off talking about you. I'm sorry HnH for perpetuating the stupidity that is this thread.

In truth, barring direct divine intervention, I never will be. I mean I encourage all the rest of you folks who obviously will be of that caliber one day, but most likely, I'm just going to have to settle for no Olympic medals, and no barnful of GP horses. I'm really awfully sad that I'm such a failure as a rider. ETA: And no, I don't think I'd want Ratina Z because I'm too wussy to jump. Dressage rider. Remember?

I was just commenting on the fact that her personality is what sealed the deal. He might have bought an equally nice horse for the same price elsewhere had he not adored her as much as we do.JT.. I'm with you, I don't like nasty horses (or dogs for that matter) and have absolutely ZERO patience for assholes. Tess is a Mess, but she's not a bitch, just a spaz. If she were bitchy.... I wouldn't have bought her and would probably have sold her.I agree that a horses personality is what you make it, Idgie certainly isn't the same horse that she was when HnH bought her. However, I do think there is an underlying temperament in all animals and people. An animal that is genetically disposed to being "bad tempered" is probably able to be relatively nice or at the least standoffish with the right home, but in the wrong hands can be downright dangerous. A nicely temperamented animal is usually pretty hard to screw up but in a bad home they're often shy, in a good one they shine. I tend to think that temperament is mostly genetic and probably less environment but I will concede that environment does play a part.Anyway, that's my rambling take on things. lol
