And I agree. To me, that sounds ridiculous. Certainly, the guy can do whatever he wants with his money, but surely there are easier and more sensible ways to accomplish the goal of having a pleasant trail horse around. (And I didn't see you mention in the OP that he wants to breed her. If you did, I just missed it, but that does change the equation some.)

Don't argue with an idiot; people watching may not be able to tell the difference

According to the OP, the horse was sold to be a pasture puff and a trail horse. The buyer's costs are likely to exceed 20K once you figure in all of the transport costs. That fact alone is what is making some people say "holy shit, why would you pay that much for a horse for those uses?" Nobody said the mare wasn't worth 20K. Good for HnH for selling her mare to an awsome home for a good price. What more could a horse owner wish for? As a matter of fact, I have 2 horses that would fit that order exceptionally well. If he needs 2 geldings to try to have 3 of a kind, please direct him to me. I think I could part with both of mine for that price and for the home she is going to. (I'm only kidding a little bit )

Where was anyone suggesting that this person should have picked up a rescue or some grade POS?

There is no other logical explanation for that line of reasoning. How strange is it that many don't see the value in paying good money for a top quality horse, yet will invest thousands into the maintenance of a rescue that will never be a productive member of horsey society?Since we don't know all the details (or what exactly the buyer was looking for), we shouldn't criticize the buyer (i. e. "more money than brains"). Absolutely, there are plenty of horses available out there (here and in Australia) of all levels of quality, ranging in price from free to the big bucks. However, if a buyer is looking for a certain quality or type, it's not unusual at all for them to pay good money for it. A high quality horse (of any breed) is difficult to find, if your selection criteria is high enough. Evidently, this mare fit exactly what the buyer was looking for, regardless of her price or her intended purpose.
