Hi guys,
A friend of mine has had her horse diagnosed with quiet an acute case of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). The vet has *not* been very helpful intimating the 'best' thing would be to euthanase (I have nothing against this option, but surely its a last resort??). Anyway, Robs is distraught as she loves this old guy so we are getting a second opinion on the prognosis and trying to follow up with a maintenance plan - in the mean time I thought I would pick your very knowledgable brains. A bit more information about Rhino, the horse...
Rhino is a 17.1hh Irish Draught who is 17 yrs old. He is in good physical health except for the COPD. He is kept on paper with rubber matting and his hay is watered down every day.
Rhino is now on an inhaler (6 puffs) twice a day and Ventapulmin. The vet is due to come back in 2 weeks...
Can anyone tell me what their vets plan was for their horse on a 3 month - 6 month basis?
What excercise was he be able to do?
When was he able to excercise?
What was your vets prognosis of the horses life expectancy, quality of life etc?
What else can she give him to help clear mucus from the airways?

Would haylage be more suitable?
