I have a coming 4 year old mare who I have started myself. She is sweet, plesant to be around and fairly well behaived for a young horse, I actually catch myself expecting too much from her by forgeting how old she is. She still has baby moments but she handles them very well (no bucking, she once half-reared when a cat ran across her path) anyway, I recently moved her to a "Ranch" where the owner has very different training ideas as me, I was working with my mare in the round pen with side reins, he came in and took over saying she was too green (?) he told me to leave and he proceeded to work her, I had to close my eyes half the time because I was so upset. My mare does have an additude dont get me wrong. He was just wacking her with a "carrot stick" saying he was teaching her to move her shoulder over I could tell by the look in her eyes that she had NO idea what he was asking she was just scared. I can give him credit, he DID get her round penning better in just a few minutes, which is something I struggled with, but after she was amazing working in the round pen, he basically was just beating her up! he would go from one thing to another and hitting her with the stick if she didnt do it right until she reared up, then hed beat on her for rearing up!!!!He went thru the entire equine training handbook! back up, side pass, move over her shoulder, move her hind end, lunge, round pen, side reins and so on! If it were me, I would concentrate on one or two things in the entire session and call it a day. by the time he was done (this lasted about 45 minutes) she looked like she was brain fried! All of his horses he has worked with are very well trained horses, I cant imagine he did this to them? If I let him beat up my horse she will be good? She was so confused as to what he was asking, I feel like he didnt give her the opportunity to figure out what to do. But if his horses were trained like this and they are great horses do i just suck it up and try not to cry?
