I was researching neglected hooves and had come across a horse whose hoof fell off. And shortly after googling "hoof falling off" came across this:
Angel slippers on the hooves of the foal protect the mother from damage by hooves. These fall off within minutes of birth.
Anyone want to elaborate? It looks so...disgusting but interesting.
