I'm at a VERY small boarding barn, it's a private barn with 3 stalls. I have 2 horses, and there is another lady there with one horse.
I do the morning routines (feeding, turnout - which entails opening her back stall door which opens to pasture). She does all the setting her food out, including keeping a bale of hay in the aisle way to feed from. She in return does the evening care for my horses.
Anyway, I go over this morning, and her horse is out - loose in the aisle - her stall door was open, she obviously somehow opened it, or it was accidentally left open. She made a big mess of things, including tipping over pretty much anything standing up or out in the aisles. She obviously ate all of her food that was left out (which in itself is a lot, this lady feeds this horse a lot of grain 5 pounds to be exact split up in 2 feedings/day) plus she ate almost her whole bale of hay (alfalfa mix). Then the horse went to my feed bin, and opened it (it's a garbage can with a lid) and ate a LARGE amount, unfortunately not sure how much, but the grain is definitely missing, and a lot of it. It's one of those LARGE rubbermaid cans, and I'd say she ate 12-18" down into it. If not more. She was still eatting when I got there. Then she got into my Weight Builder supplement and ate that, I'd say there was about 1/3 of that left.
Thankfully my grain is "Safe Choice". So hopefully that helps, but I still worry...... I've never dealt with a situation in where a horse had access to full access grain, so not sure what the consequences are or could be? Any idea??
I've obviously called the owner, and left multiple messages, but haven't heard from them. I've checked on the mare now 3 times since this morning, including staying with her for a couple hours after I found her like that and she is so far doing fine, I put her out on her lot, so she could at least move around, maybe that is a bad idea.
Thanks for any tips!
PS - I do have Banamine on hand, if she were to need it, but she hasn't really shown any classic signs (that I would recognize) of colic, so haven't given her a dose, plus I wouldn't want to really without talking to her owner.
