Is there anything that suddenly causes an obsession to dig?
Maddie does it occasionally from time to time but the past month and a half have been absolutely ridiculous. She "digs" the carpet for a full minute-minute and a half before she lies down. I don't mean one paw scrape, scrape, scrape. I mean both paws going to town as if she's trying to get to china.
I had a duffle bag of old clothes in my room that she actually got into and dug them OUT of the bag onto the floor in a pile. Then proceeded to dig around in them before lying ontop.
She has a foam matt downstairs she loves lying on, and since this weird habit escalated she digs like a fiend at that too before lying down.
She's usually amazing at the barn but has now become a holy terror. I can usually let her off on her own and she'll stick on property or just explore the barn. Now she goes into empty stalls and digs HUGE holes in each corner of the stalls. Sometimes she lies in the hole and sometimes she moves on to the next corner/stall. Short of tying her up, she'll go off to do it again regardless of being reprimanded.
We have dirt banked up along the barn because it's set a little lower in the ground so the banked dirt prevents flooding. She's now been trying to dig holes in that banked dirt which is a big no-no.
Oddly enough, she doesn't dig in either sand arena. At first at the barn I thought maybe she was smelling mice or some other sort of pest but now I don't think so..
Any thoughts?
