I totally agree! It really irks me to see people trash talking 4-H because a lot of areas do have great 4-H clubs with very knowledgeable leaders and talented kids who compete at top breed shows also. But it really truly does depend on the area. You got it absolutely right about how a club is only as good as its leaders/parents. If you have leaders who don't know crap, then its just the blind leading the blind. If you have good, knowledgeable leaders, who themselves are still out there and active in the current horse world, then the sky is the limit for the kids who they mentor. As for sale ads marketing horses at "4-H prospects" -- to me a 4-H prospect is a nice grade horse, or even a registered one who just isn't quite nice enough to be competitive at the breed shows. There are plenty of good show horses out there who aren't quite spectacular enough to win on the big circuits, but can really clean house at a 4-H or open show.

(I cant even count the number of kids who shorted stock breeds tails because the 4-H book said so) What is really taught, depends on what club a kid is in... With pony club atleast they have the levels and tests. I would love to see pony club form a western branch or 4-H step up to the plate.

That is so odd, because where I lived it was completely opposite! Meh, takes all kinds.
