We had an old wooden chair outside (my mom re-dos antiques) and my dad broke it over the dogs head and he dropped Roxanne. The bill was about 800, we almost lost her. My mom said they wouldn't have to pay the vet bills if they just got rid of the dog, they have A BABY IN THE HOUSE!!!!......they paid the bills and the dog remains there.... I guess they won't get it until the baby is scarred for life?
I don't want to start another war on dog aggression but I had to say something Just because a dog attacks another dog does NOT mean it will attack a person/baby. I own a dog that is animal aggressive, she has killed cats, racoons and have fought other dogs (she is always in a kennel, tied up or on a leash for the last 6 yrs or so, this happened earlier in her life) anyway, I trust her completely with my children. Maybe you might think I'm nuts but she is NOT people aggressive in anyway. One of my kids actually ruptured a disc in her back trying to ride her and she did nothing. I found her laying in the corner whimpering (son got in BIG trouble!) My point is people automatically jump to "they have kids!" but unless the dog has shown aggression to PEOPLE, I'm not worried that the children are going to get mauled.

I am not saying that the dog isn't dangerous but the correlation of it attacked dog it will attack me or my children is utter bullshit. I assure you while dogs aren't as smart as we are they know the difference between other dogs and you the human and other animals. A dog CAN redirect mistakenly from another dog to a human but that in general is after it has started attacking the other dog and someone tries to break up the fight.
I wonder if that's how the idea perpetuates? Someone has a dog-aggressive dog, someone tries to break up a fight and gets bitten, people assume the dog is going from dogs to people when really it was just a bad situation (where it was either accidental, or the dog was too wound up to think.)
Which is not to say that people with poorly controlled dogs shouldn't get in trouble, just because their dog isn't likely to hurt a person- out of control is out of control, and they should do something about it. (And there are people who have dogs with dog aggression problems who manage them quite successfully- but it's not for the average dog owner because of the level of awareness that it requires.) Plus they DO represent a threat to other pet owners, who may get bitten trying to rescue their own dog. So it is something to take quite seriously.
