Holy crap, it really has been that long! First, she was jogging early one morning out in the suburbs of Santa Barbara, when she glanced into a pretty ravine, as she often did. On that day, however, she did not see the pretty ivy or the merry little babbling brook. Instead, she saw the bloody, naked corpse of a man. Turns out some other men had taken this guy home, they'd all gotten drunk, they fought, and he was murdered. A week or so later, an elderly man keeled over into some potted rose bushes a couple of feet away from my mother an I, out in front of a Safeway. His face got split open by the side of one of the pots. I'll never forget that. The next week, the church choir director (if I remember correctly) walked off the end of a very, very tall bridge. It was purposeful, but he didn't leave a note or anything. He'd just gotten married. He was a psychologist, who specialized in veterans with PTSD. Maybe he just heard too much. I don't really know. No one will ever know why he did it. I don't think mom had ever seen a dead person before. That might make reluctant to leave the house.

"My horse spooked in the woods and so I'm convinced he could smell a corpse." And when she told me about this, the day after it happened, I told her she should ring the local copper, but she just looked ominous and said "The killer will have moved it by now." Which didn't help my fear AT ALL.
That sounds soooo scary! I think I would have called the cops, but maybe said that you (she) came across a suspicious looking pile of clothing. It would probably sound a little less nutty then telling them, "My horse smells a dead body." (Even though we all know it very well could be possible that the horse was on to something, I agree that they probably wouldn't have believed it if you had put it that way). Anyways, good luck and stay safe! I hope for your family's sake that it turns out to be nothing.

Now we didn't call the police because we didn't want them to think we killed him either,so we drove by him a couple of times then drove off. I kind of felt bad though.
Wow... that's kind of awful of you. You didn't even call the police? If you had pulled over at the nearest gas station and called, and explained why you didn't stop, and hung around to talk to them, I highly doubt they would have thought you killed him.

that is my last horse and he was OTTB,he did look like a saddlebred though and he gaited! that was unexpected! not that he did it all the time, just if I had him in an arena collected up just right. He was a freak of nature ,I'm sure that's how I ended up with him,the people I bought him from were afraid of him,and wanted to try to sell him before sending him to the killers

When I was in my early 20s my friend and I were heading to Yuma from California. About midway we saw buzzards just getting ready to land on something. We knew whatever it was was dead because buzzards won't land if the object isn't dead yet. We were brave souls and got out, walked up the sand dune and came upon a body. It was all bloated with the eyes popping out and everything. No cell phones back in the day so we got in the old Ford Falcon and headed towards the nearest law dog. Well we got to a prison first so we talked to the first guard we saw. We weren't even suppose to be there. We told our story and before we even got back in our car they hollared at us to wait. We had to get in their car and take them back to where the body was. Of course we were grilled in the meantime. lol They were nice though. We got back to the spot and they told us to wait inside. After about 15 mins. they came back and made a comment. "Yep, that's him alright". I'll never forget it. He was an escapee that didn't make it too far. 115 degree days with no water doesn't do a body good.
Ah yes, were you just a ways past El Centro then? That's the town I grew up in. The New River passed by town, and the story was that the silt was so thick in it (it's really polluted, or at least it was) that a lot of times when a body was dumped in it, once it sank it didn't come back up, even when the gasses started to build up. I think they tried to rename it "The All-American Canal," even though it came up from Mexico full of crap. Lots of gangs and drugs there in the 80s too. Fun place. Don't stop there.

No prison out there would be a vacation spot, I tell you what.
People get 2nd degree burns on their feet just from walking outside for a moment without shoes.
