Okay so I've got a pretty recently gelded 2 year old (Gelded in April, never bred, never had the chance) who is nuts over 2 mares at our barn. Not all his
fault though, when they are in heat they are all over him and he plays his role. It didn't matter to me at first, he would just rub on them and stuff, but
now he's nipping and both mares have marks from it. He's already got limited turn out (there is a yearling filly whose owner is positive Epicus will
MAKE her foal go into heat) and I really don't want to keep him cooped up all the time. Is there something I can do!? Something I can give him? There are 5
other mares that pay absolutely no attention to him, and he doesn't care about them. One of the mares that doesn't care about him is my broodmare, she
was in love with him when he was a stallion, but a few weeks after he was gelded and she was in heat she kicked the crap out of him and it hasn't been a
problem since. So, what is it about these 2 mares?
We have a pretty small pasture and a few smaller paddocks, but we can't turn out in 2 of the paddocks and the other is home to a mini. It rained and they were both outside and running in the mud and the mini slipped and his owner blamed the accident on Epicus(I'm sure he wasn't completely innocent, but stuff happens, they are animals), so they aren't aloud to go out with one another anymore. We have a hurt mare (broke a bone in her leg kicking at a stallion behind our property, she's going for surgery this week) and my 19 year old mare (sweating problem, she can't go in the direct sun for long periods of time) in the arena, so he can't go there.
He isn't proud cut, we made sure of that, and he was never, to my knowledge, bred. Is this just something he needs to get out of his system? These two mares won't kick him if they are in heat, so for the time being should I turn him out with the ones that will? I don't want him to get hurt, obviously, but I want him to learn his lesson! Any suggestions?
