The owners didn't leave us any contact numbers. And, no - even our dogs aren't allowed in the house further than the entryway - which is too small for four dogs. We don't have a dog-proof fence here, or I'd have brought them home.

I would have called and let the neighbors know to ask what they wanted me to do about the dogs getting out. They might have had you buy harnesses for them to stake them out, or even wanted to pay to kennel them. If I had the feeling that they wouldn't want to go there, I probably would have gone and purchased harnesses and charged them for it. There's just no way I would have continued putting dogs back in a yard they were escaping from like that. Unfortunately QHSliding, most runaway dogs don't DON'T come back and that's not just my opinion. Take a look at shelter statistics.

It's the owner's responsibility to leave a contact number and they didn't, I wouldn't feel guilty 4H&H.
When I go out of town I leave my cell and my hubby's cell #, the vet's phone # and the hotel we'll be at plus a contact # of a family member but I'm paranoid! The owners were irresponsible and you did the best you can. It's not up to you to fix their fence or buy harnesses to tie them up. I hope the dogs come back but don't feel bad.

Yes, well I wasn't really involved in the logistics of this. They asked my daughter directly and the only thing I did was give her permission to do it..... Yes, once the dogs were out, I wished I had thought to get a contact number.... I ALWAYS do that when I'm caring for other people's horses. As well as asking about what type injuries they want me to call the vet for, or handle myself, etc. in the event I can't reach them via cell.

Had I just accepted that the owner had no emergency contact information, we would have had to wait for hours at the vet's before the owner showed up and the dog could be treated properly. What if a dog 4H&H was watching had escaped and been injured, requiring emergency medical treatment? Nobody could have known if the owner would prefer to have the dog euthanised right away, or how much they were willing to spend on treatment. They also wouldn't have been able to find out any information on the dog if it had any medical issues that the vet would need to know about before treatment. It's just the right thing to do to make it your responsibility to be able to get in touch with someone if you are in charge of their property, not to mention keep their property safe while it's in your care.
First of all you are running a business and you would not be a good business owner if you accepted clients and money to groom their dog without getting their information. This is her neighbor that asked her daughter to feed the dogs. The owners were completely irresponsible in not leaving contact information. How would this be 4H&H's fault? I'm sure if she ever takes care of a neighbor's animal now she'll make sure she has their info. Maybe it makes me sound heartless but if I asked someone to take care of my dogs and knew there was a hole in the fence I wouldn't expect them to fix my fence with their own money. That is my responsibility and would be my fault if the dogs got out.
If she had gone out and bought harnesses and ties there is a very good chance her neighbor would of said that they were not paying her back because they never wanted her to buy those things and then she would be out her own money. I think there is a BIG difference in running a dog grooming business or even a pet sitting business than the neighbor casually asking a little kid to check on their dogs. I think the neighbors are 100% at fault in this and 4H&H shouldn't feel responsible.
